Return to ParadiseReturn to Paradise (1998)

IMDB rating: 6.70

Plot: Lewis, Sheriff and Tony are three American guys who meet and hang out one summer at the beach huts of Malaysia. There they enjoy the luxuries of women, rum and hashish. As the summer ends, Tony and Sheriff go back to New York, but Lewis decides to go to Borneo to help save the orangutan. But before he got the chance to leave, he was arrested for possession of the leftover hash and sentenced to death because he was considered to be trafficking. Two years go by and Sheriff and Tony are living their lives peacefully in The Big Apple when Lewis’ lawyer tells them the news: three years each if they both go, six years if one goes, Lewis’ death if neither go. Although they both do not want Lewis to die, they do not know him well enough to really want to sacrifice three years of their life to a Third-World prison. “Return to Paradise” watches Sheriff and Tony as they struggle to decide in the short period of time.

Would you brave the flaming sword to return to paradise?
I don’t believe in God, but I do believe in Jungian archetypes.

Genesis 3:24
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Would you suffer ego death to return to innocence?

If you go around the perimeter, and look carefully, there are a few hidden ways back in. Some of them are better hidden than others, and that Jungian Archetype only looks scary from the outside, and I’m sorry, but he’s going to have to do better than just looking scary to keep me out. And although the Ego’s Death can be quite traumatic, it’s always a liberating experience to just let it go, and stop fighting. (It always crawls back, properly admonished, and more appropiately proportioned after a while, anyway) Maybe, just maybe, that’s the whole point, to leave your Ego behind, and only then, (when we are not ego tagging everything, and therefore, no longer strictly speaking, Men) can we realise that we never left the Garden, and the illusion that we did, was a direct consequence of Ego developement. Or knowledge of good and evil. Just a thought.

According to Sumerian legend, paradise is now under water.

(See the Epic of Gilgamesh, tablet 11.)

Funny. The story of the Garden of Eden likely took place around 4000 BC or earlier, at a time when geologists said sea level was rising.

Yes, it would be under water right now.

What God puts together no man can destroy-so that would be pointless and I would die trying

I’m ok with the way things are today (minus the death and hungry people in the world) but Christians will no longer suffer when we meet our creator so until then we can wait

No, "ego death" is too often synonymous with intellectual surrender.

I was more fond of Jungian psychology in my youth than I am now.

You’ve a funny way of expressing yourself, but if I understand correctly ……yes,

The problem with your premise is that ego death can never occur because in and of itself the ego cannot die. Ego death would have to mean the end of consciousness all together as ego represents the desire of the self. Even the unconsciousness still has ego as the human brain strives for consciousness and preservation. And self preservation is innate to humans. Therefore true ego death means that we are completely dead.

From the first part of your question, where exactly is paradise? The second part, I still consider myself innocence therefore have no need to suffer ego death.

I’ve experienced a glimpse of ego death before through meditation, and I will admit although you feel more pure its wierd and difficult when you go out into society because you’re no longer inclined to talk about shallower stuff like celebrities, going out drinking, idle gossip, fashion etc and I felt like a fish out of water because I was on a totally different level to everyone else, then the reality hits you about the real extent of peer pressure and the power society actually has to suck you back into the everyday mentality….I felt uncomfortable without the normal level of ego so I let myself slip back into ‘normality’ again

I guess if I was to go back and find that state of conciousness again i’d have to get out of my hometown, maybe go somewhere like Nepal for a while, and give myself a chance to adapt to the lack of ego and figure out how i’d deal with western culture, or even if I should ever go back to it, because it takes some guts
